ONE OF GOD'S EXCITING CLIFFHANGERS

Expository; Acts 12: 1-17
12:1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)
4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the
side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.
9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.
10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.
11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.
13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.
14 And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.
15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.
17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go show these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

Introduction; The last minute rescue which is so commonly used to add suspense to drama is not something new! Over and over, God has delivered his people only when it seemed all hope was gone. In this exciting episode as in the others, there are some important lessons for us to learn.
I.Acts 12:1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
Acts 12:2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
This is a continuation of the persecution of Acts 11:19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
A. Question; Why didn't God give James deliverance like he did Peter? Answer; Which requires the greater faith and Grace, to Live or to die? Which is better? "To depart and be with Christ is far better."
II. Acts 12:3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)
A. Persecution will always increase when it is politically advantageous. "Fundamentalist Baiting" is fast becoming a favorite game!
Question; Does this lessen the effectiveness of the christian witness? Consider the events which follow.
III. Acts 12:4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
Acts 12:6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
A. The lengths to which men will go to try to stop the Gospel! This might have worked, had it been only a matter of stopping men!
B.' Four quaternions' That's four four-man squads. Sixteen men to guard one Baptist preacher!. Plus one on each side while he sleeps in chains! This has to be a most dangerous criminal!
IV. Another force is at work. The Church prays about something that is beyond their human ability and power. Acts 12:5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
2 Cor 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
2 Cor 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
V. Acts 12:6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
This was Jewish time; the evening precedes the day. God seems to wait till the last minute to prove the earnestness of his people.
Gal 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
1 Pet 5:10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
VI. Acts 12:7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
Acts 12:8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.
Acts 12:9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

A. How could Peter sleep at a time like this?! What else COULD he have been doing? It is all in God's hands now. Note the order of events from here on.;
1.Wake up! God is ready to start the action.
2.Get up. (Prepare for action!) and only then did;
3. The chains fell away.
Maybe God is following the same schedule with us! Perhaps our hinderances would fall if we woke up and prepared for action!
VII. Acts 12:8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.
'Get dressed and follow me'
Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
Eph 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

The power which removed the chains, could have clothed him in a Hart, Shaftner and Marx three Piece pinstripe and Florsheim Wingtips but it didn't. Why? Peter was able to dress himself and God does nothing for us we can do for ourselves.
VIII .Acts 12:10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.
A. Peter COULD have set there until all the doors and gates were opened, but this one opened ONLY as they approached.
IX. Acts 12:11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
Acts 12:12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.
Acts 12:13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.
Acts 12:14 And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.
Acts 12:15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
Acts 12:16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.
Acts 12:17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go show these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

A. The surprising victory of answered prayer! But the story would have ended far differently if;--
1.The church had not prayed.
2.Peter had waited for effortless deliverance.

Did the churches not pray for those who faced the lions in the pits or the gladiators? And yet many were allowed to die. To what end? Why were they allowed such cruel ends when this one was saved? Was their faith stronger? They didn't believe enough to open the door right away and were then amazed that their prayers were asnwered which would indicate they did not truly believe God would spare him. This sermon left me with more questions than answers!

Thank you for the opportunity to clarify these things. I pray the following might be of some help.
Yes, the churches did indeed pray for those who died during the days of persecution. To what end did they die? One practical answer is that their deaths were a witness to the Grace of God. Even their tormentors were forced to exclaim in wonder, "Their blood is their seed!" Other than that, only God knows the answer to, ‘Why?’
Isa 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
Isa 55:9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Why are some prayers answered and others are not?
When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, one of the major points in that lesson was, "Mat 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." God's will is not ours to command, but to accept.
It must also be remembered that death has passed upon all men and all must die, [Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:]
Therefore no one has actually been saved from death but only had the time of his dying postponed for a while.
We are to earnestly pray for those in danger or facing death but always remember, "Thy Will be done".
Therefore for us to question God concerning any happening or to judge His reasoning is futile.
