THE BIBLE AND ASTRONOMY

Psa 19:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork.
Psa 19:2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge.
Psa 19:3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
Psa 19:4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
Psa 19:5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
Psa 19:6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

While researching lately for other writings, I was amazed at the recent discoveries in the study of the heavens by modern science. Those involved in this research evidently have no idea that they are fulfilling prophecy even today. Acts 2:19 And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:

It is not my purpose, in this lesson, to lay out all the amazing new discoveries that come to light each day since these are being covered in another manuscript I am currently working on, but rather to present some simple things which are striking because of their accuracy as opposed to much of the thinking at the time of their being written.

A. Consider the composition of matter,
Heb 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Heb 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
The child of God, who accepts the fact that all things were created by the Word of His Power {Psa 33:9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.} was not surprised to learn that the basic component of matter is not the atom but energy or POWER.

B. Consider the Shape of the Earth; Is it round or flat? Isa 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:


C. The Earth is suspended in space. Job 26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
How did Job know that?

D. The earth spins upon its axis in its relationship to the sun. Job 38:12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
Job 38:13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
Job 38:14 It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

E. How did Job know that air had weight before scientists discovered that fact? Job 28:25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.

F. The regular circuits of the winds. (Anyone who watches the satellite picture on the daily weather reports has to be amazed at Solomon's knowlege on this subject.) Eccl 1:6 The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

G. How many stars are there?
1. In 150 B.C. Hippaichus claimed they numbered 1,022
2. In 125 A.D. Ptolemy had found four more and said there were 1,026.
3. Galileo looked through his telescope and said there were ‘countless numbers’
4. 2200 years earlier, Jeremiah had said, Jer 33:22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.
5. Earlier, Moses had written God’s declaration to Abrham, Gen 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

H. It took man thousands of years after David to learn he could learn more about the universe by ‘listening’ to the stars by radio telescope. Maybe if scientists had listened to God’s men they would have made more progress. Ps 19:1The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork.
